In Bangladesh, inadequate access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services continues to affect the health, dignity, and well-being of vulnerable communities, particularly in climate-sensitive and hard-to-reach areas. Frequent floods, waterlogging, salinity intrusion, and poor hygiene practices further increase the risk of waterborne diseases and environmental health challenges. In response, POPI’s WASH interventions aim to promote safe and sustainable access to water and sanitation services through community awareness, behaviour change, resilient infrastructure, and inclusive financing mechanisms. By strengthening local capacities and encouraging community participation, we strive to improve public health, enhance resilience, and ensure dignified living conditions for underserved populations across Bangladesh.

Key Components of our WASH Programme

Training and Awareness Programmes

We conduct training and community awareness programmes to improve knowledge and practices related to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene. These initiatives empower communities with practical information on hygiene management, disease prevention, menstrual hygiene management, and the proper use and maintenance of WASH facilities.

Behaviour Change Practices

Our behaviour change interventions encourage communities to adopt healthy hygiene habits such as regular handwashing with soap, safe water handling, proper sanitation practices, and household cleanliness. Through community engagement, courtyard sessions, school campaigns, and participatory approaches, we promote long-term positive behavioural transformation.

Safe Drinking Water Solutions

We support access to safe and affordable drinking water through the installation and rehabilitation of water supply systems, deep tube wells, water purification technologies, and community-based water management solutions, particularly in underserved and climate-vulnerable areas.

Water Credit for Access to Safe Water and Latrines

To ensure inclusive access to WASH services, we facilitate water credit and small financing mechanisms that enable low-income households to install safe water sources and hygienic latrines, thereby improving household health, dignity, and sanitation conditions.

Resilient Sanitary Infrastructure

We promote climate-resilient and disaster-tolerant sanitation facilities designed to withstand floods, waterlogging, cyclones, and other environmental challenges common in Bangladesh. These resilient infrastructures help ensure sustainable and safe sanitation services for vulnerable communities.

Development of Local WASH Entrepreneurs

Our initiatives support the development of local WASH entrepreneurs by providing technical training, business guidance, and market linkage support. This approach helps create sustainable local solutions for sanitation products and WASH-related services while generating livelihood opportunities within communities.

Rainwater Harvesting

We promote rainwater harvesting systems as an alternative and sustainable water source in areas affected by salinity, water scarcity, and climate change. These systems help communities collect, store, and utilize rainwater for drinking and household purposes throughout the year, contributing to improved water security and resilience.
